The story revolves around a brave heart Barun Biswas, portrayed by Parambrata Chatterjee, who raises voice against numerous gang rapes in a village called Dukhiya. Dukhiya, where gang rapes had become a festival. These are celebrated by some political criminals. They do not
even spare children and aged females. Police also will not take up any complaints against these powerful criminals. Barun Biswas with his team forms a forum named 'Jagaran Mancha' and stands against all odds and forced the law to arrest the culprits. Eventually, the accused men get Barun Biswas murdered leaving the entire village in shock and pain. Later, Binod Bihari Dutta, portrayed by Paran Bondhopadhyay, coming to Dukhiya in search of the truth behind Barun's murder. Binod comes to know about the goons (who are by now released on bail), and the way they have terrorized the village. Binod tries to motivate villagers the way Barun did.
The previous films made under my direction had a hero each. A Hero who alone would take care of the whole gang of goons…a Hero who is always right and a Hero who would not die. My projection of a hero has always been larger than life; all so mechanical only to add advantage to entertainment quotient. But one day an article in a newspaper had sparked the Hero within Me. I decided to portray the life of this Real Hero Barun Biswas - A Hero who fought for the society…selflessly and had sacrificed his own life. Barun Biswas, a common man who proved himself a hero with his not so common acts. He, who was a fighter, fought against all odds to protect women in the Sutia village, West Bengal, India. I decided to portray his real life on a bigger canvas as his story might be of that particular village but the issue was much more global, every individual will relate with. So I decided for a location very different from the look of the original village. I shot the film in village of Purulia, West Bengal. The look of the village is very dry and rough, which is similar to the script’s demand as the scarcity will be depicted through not only the characters but also the location itself. Barun Biswas was a school teacher in Kolkata and the script is based on his life. The first half of the film is ‘Fact’, where we have shown Barun’s original school, his works for the village, the gang which he made to protect and rescue women etc etc. The second half of the film begins after the Hero dies. This time it is a work of ‘Fiction’. Second half has revealed the Barun Biswas which resides inside everyone. As I always say, there is a hero within everyone, we just need to discover. First half has one Barun Biswas, and the second half has many a Barun Biswas, the characters who took forward Barun’s ideologies to inspire people.I named the film Proloy. ‘Proloy’ means a Storm so strong which may turn the world upside down. Proloy, which took place when Lord Shiva’s third eye opened and he danced his fury out. The film has depicted our society which is unwell and sick and has portrayed the end of humanity. This is when a Proloy is needed to rescue the dying humanity. Barun, which means a Storm too, has ignited the Proloy and transferred the light; and has given birth to, many more Barun Biswas.
Proloy is not only a work of inspiration for me, but also my wish of doing something for the society
